The Process
All of my pieces are one of a kind. The clay that I use is a mixture of white stoneware and
porcelain formulated especially for me based on my specifications. I never use molds or templates.
There are 3 major techniques that I use:
The Sgraffito Series
The Sgraffito series involves a technique wherein after
I wheel-throw the piece, I apply a metal oxide-colored
porceain slip to the surface. I then let it dry
to a leather-hard state, after which I carve intricate designs into the clay.
The Tactile Series
In the Tactile series, after the piece is wheel-thrown and trimmed, during the leather hard state, I hand apply spikes
to the surface of the piece.
The Organika series
In the Organika Series, I carve free-handed designs into the piece
with carving loops, dental and
self-made tools during the leather hard stage.
All of my work is bisque-fired for 12 hours at 1828 degrees F. Then they are dipped, sprayed or
brushed with a glaze. All the glazes are of my own chemical formulation and therefore unique to me.
After glazing, the pieces are fired at 2240F. The glazes I primarily use are: The Paros White, where
I have tried to simulate the color and texture of the pebbles on Paros Island in Greece, where I have
spent a small part of my life. The Panos Red is a very complex, saturated iron-saturated glaze.
This glaze was a challenge for me to create and is a source of pride for me, so I have named it
after my father. Other glazes include the Dimitri Big Blue and the Vassily gold-flecked tenmoku.
